“History will be kind to me”, said Winston Churchill, “for I intend to write it.” I’m reading two Churchill tomes at the moment - “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples” and “The Second World War” (abridged). They are both exceptionally absorbing, and I recommend them to anyone with any interests in these subjects. Contrary to my own preconceptions, I find him to be a lively, accessible writer.
No other post on this day.
Churchill’s British bulldog appearance and portentuous delivery were somewhat at odds with a keen and often wicked mind (cf the copious quotes attributed to him). He was also one of the few Western politicians to write serious political books as opposed to ghosted autobiographies…
Churchill was one of the few Western politicians to write serious political books because he was one of the few Western politicians to have serious political thoughts of his own. Most of the remainder relied on “advisors” to come up with a plan, reducing politicians to mere policy salesmen - mostly of the “used car” variety.
