“A massive government database holding details of every phone call made and letter sent by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism. The Post office would open and copy every letter before delivery, and would hand over their records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.”
The Times, yesterday
I’ve slightly changed the above extract - the original Times report refers to phone calls and e-mails, - not letters. My reason? I wanted to see whether substituting “letters” for “e-mails” would make these colossally outrageous plans any more shocking. We have, after all, been groomed for years to consider the Internet a playground for terrorists, and in dire need of regulation. I, for one, will be encrypting all my e-mails from on on. It may not be fully adequate protection - but it’s a gesture.
In related news, Tory leader David Cameron intends to be the new Margaret Thatcher. “With a growing lead in the polls”, says the Daily Mirror, “Mr Cameron is believed to be increasingly confident of setting out a right-wing agenda.”
More right wing than the present lot?
God save us all.
No other post on this day.
You have a beard…you’re encrypting your emails…I give you 24 hours before they come knocking…
They won’t knock. They’ll kick the door in.
Ah yes…but will it be the right door??
Thank God it wasn’t the edukashun minister responding…that’ll be ‘warrant’ Jacqui…
That makes one of us, then….
Of course, under my administration, we would protect the rights of citizens and cuddle that door down
You don’t want to know what we sniff for…
Yeah - our reach is vast!

I did consider protesting to the British government when I found out they had been listening to all my phone calls to home while I lived in Ireland. Then I figured that British taxpayers had more reason to protest - that is one huge waste of money. They probably do some sort of analysis whether the investment pays off, but it’s a bit too easy for the listeners to point out foiled terrorist plans. Well, obviously they were foiled, as the attacks didn’t happen. (A bit like the fridge magnet I have that keeps lions out of the fridge. Seems to be 100% effective so far.)
Perhaps if we FOI’d them we could treat this as an amazing, efficient free data backup service. No need every to worry that you’ve forgotten a conversation, lost a file, had a hard drive crash… etc.
In fact, perhaps we can ask them to provide a reminder service. If the Government saw it as a service to taxpayer as well as surveillance, a polite phone call from a US base in Yorkshire reminding you that you had said in an earlier phone conversation with granny that you would do x or y. You need never have to remember anything ever again.
And if you don’t give it to us, we’ll get it from you - accurately. Apparently
