Just received an e-mail saying that the first monthly repayment from loans made to Kiva at Christmas has arrived. I’m very impressed with this creative and humanitarian use of the Internet. The loan in question was made to a 34-year old woman who sells eggplant, okra, and tomatoes in at a market in Sassandra, a rural city on the south-west coast of Cote d’Ivoire. She is married, and has 2 children. Her husband is a factory worker in San-Pedro, near Sassandra. Her business contributes to the household and education expenses of her family. I’ll definitely be using these funds, when finally repaid, to support another similar venture, and encourage you to do the same, too!
No other post on this day.
I agree - just got my payment notice from Kiva regarding the Azerbaijani woman I, along with many others, have loaned money to buy a counter-refrigerator for her small food store. She is helping to support her family from this enterprise as well as making regular payments to Kiva. It’s a great example of how the internet can create a global community in the old-fashioned sense of the word.
