First impression: wow! Second impression; isn’t there something slightly, um, OCD about keeping lists like this? I mean, what else does he keep lists about? Third impression: I consider myself well-read, but if Art and I ever got together for a cosy literary chat in some congenial watering-hole, the conversation would probably dissolve after a couple of minutes or so… Art would be giving me a homily about Harold Mattingly’s ’66 classic “The Man in the Roman Street” that Art read back in ’76, and I’d slowly glaze over… Wow, Art, wow!
No other post on this day.
I bet you a Gibson (for you, daiquiri for me) that if you ever met him, he wouldn’t be able to remember enough about any book he’s read to give you any kind of homily.
Lots of people keep lists like this.
(Not me, I hasten to add. Frankly if I can’t remember reading a book - without an aide memoire -then I don’t think it counts as ‘read’.)
