John Sweeney & the Scientologists

I’ve had some experience of John Sweeney, the BBC reporter who is in hot water over his strange outburst, carefully preserved on video by the Scientologists, the subject of his investigation.

John is certainly an emotional man. But he’s also done some fine investigative reporting, particularly in regard to Professor Sir Roy Meadow, the first President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and the cot death scandal.

Whatever possessed John to behave like this is hard to fathom. He’s been in war zones, presumably under far more stress than John Travolta and the Scientologists have exposed him to. The intriguing, and very tricky, problem now that the BBC face is – do they back him or hang him out to dry? Watch the media coverage today for indications of how this story will play.
