Over the past few years, I’ve been to the majority of gyms in central London - and, in one way or another, found most of them wanting in one way or another.
The best gyms of all are old-fashioned boxing gyms. Should you happen to live near one (unlikely), go for it. Sadly, they are a dying species. My current gym is very good, but is closed for alterations, so they kindly provided a comp membership at another one (a big chain). The difference is marked.
At the new place, I’ve never seen anyone cleaning - 6:30am, 7:30am, 8;30am - doesn’t matter what time I go, there’s no-one in evidence. Considering we’re in the midst of a flu epidemic (I’m still not back to 100% personally) I think this is really disgraceful. At my other gym, there’s one cleaner who continually cleans all the equipment at peak hours - which is how it should be.
What’s yours like?
No other post on this day.
Recent New Scientist has a big article about how exposure to all sorts of filth lowers your risk of cancer - by keeping your immune system primed and in good shape to pick off those early cancer cells. Our highly sanitized lifestyle is making our immune systems weak and lily-livered. Daycare babies come home with a fresh virus every week but they have much lower risk of leukemia in later life. Then again, some viruses predispose you to tumours. But not the type of viruses that you’re going to encounter on yukky gym equipment. Revel in the grime, Pete. It could be keeping you alive!
