I’ve always felt uneasy about the widespread searching (in the US) of shoppers’ bags on the exit from certain stores - Circuit City and CompUSA come to mind, but there are plenty of other offenders. The presumption is that every consumer is a potential shoplifter, and that every megalithic company has a right to search its customers. To me, this feels like a basic violation of individual rights, to say nothing of the absence of respect that every company surely owes its patrons. And, as this victim writes, “it creates an atmosphere of obedience which is a dangerous thing”. This is what happens if you refuse to be searched. I’m only surprised they didn’t taser him and accuse him of being a terrorist. In the absence of clearly-defined legal rights for shoppers, I’d say the answer is obviously- boycott the buggers.
